BBC 1’s Bodyguard was one of the UK’s biggest TV shows of 2018, and we're still all obsessed with Keeley Hawes and Richard Madden’s show. But is there going to be a second series, when is it on, and can you hurry up and get it to us ASAP, please BBC, yeah?

Is Bodyguard series 2 definitely happening?

Not definitely, but the show's creator Jed Mercurio has revealed that he is "in talks" about a second series of Bodyguard.

"We're in talks. We're going through the logistics of it," he said, adding: "There's no real update now."

As far a storyline for a second series goes, Richard Madden recently suggested that any future episodes would need a significant time jump.

"We've been talking about it and I spoke to Jed about a month after the show had finished airing over in the UK and we sat and decided, 'Let's give it at least a year while we work out how to do something better.'"

He added: "You cannot jump into it. David Budd definitely needs a vacation after that. He's not going to go back to work, is he? And also he's the most famous man in London because of what happens at the end of episode six. He couldn't just go straight back into work.

"Me and Jed both agree that there's something much more interesting in 'let's catch up with him 18 months later, two years later after this has happened and say where is he now? What's happened to him?'"

Jed also said a while back that there's potential for up to three(!) more seasons.

Speaking to The Sun , he said: "It's probably fair to say we would probably approach any thoughts of a second series with the idea that it would create an opportunity for a third or fourth."

He also told the Daily Mirror while the show was running that "I have got some ideas for a second series, but it is worth waiting until the run is finished to see which bits worked and which bits didn’t work for the audience.”

Look, we all want to watch Richard Madden being all manly and strong in a second series of Bodyguard, but we have to be realistic: his ever rising popularity means he may not be available to film a second series. A point Jed is very aware of.

“He's the genuine article, a real leading man. And I think this role has put him very much in the spotlight for bigger things,” Jed told Radio Times.

“So the practicality may be that we have to work around his availability if we are lucky to get him back.”

And as for Keeley Hawes, we still don’t know for sure if her character – Julia Montague – did indeed die in that explosive. Although, she probably did. So best not to get your hopes up about her returning for series 2.

Bodyguard series 2 release date

Seeing as we don’t even know for sure if a second series is definitely happening, we obviously don’t have a release date yet. But as soon as we have one, we’ll be sure to let you know.
